We’re working with NABERS to add the Renewable Energy Indicator (REI) to Building Energy Efficiency Certificates (BEECs) by May 2026.

The REI accounts for a building’s electricity, gas and diesel consumption, reflecting the percentage of energy use that comes from renewable sources. It shows how much of a building’s energy comes from on‑site renewable energy, and how much is purchased from off‑site renewable sources. It currently appears on all NABERS Energy rating certificates and rating reports, at no extra cost.

What does this change mean?

  • The REI graph will appear on all BEECs
  • BEECs will also show a detailed breakdown of the amount of renewable and non-renewable energy the building uses

Important information

The REI does not change the NABERS Energy rating, nor how it is calculated. It also does not need to be shown in building or office advertisements for sale or lease.
